This past week we recognized the National Day of Prayer for our nation and community by hosting a prayer breakfast. This was the fifth year that we have done this. Each year we take a different part of our society, what we call a mind-molder, and invite someone to come and briefly speak on how prayer influences their daily life. Our purpose is to show the power of God in all areas of our society, not just in the church.
The first year our guest was U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan representing government. Then Dr. John Aherne the Superintendent of Abington Schools spoke representing education. Next, Jamie Bush a local businessman and cousin to President Bush represented business. Last year we invited Joe Fitzgerald, a writer from the Boston Herald to represent the media.

This year we were very pleased to have Walter Day, chaplain to the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots come and speak to us representing Sports and Entertainment. What an awesome message he shared with an audience of about 120 people. His testimony was very moving of how he had lost his Father, a good friend, and his mother all in a four month span when he was 13 years old. How God had led him to a family that I actually knew growing up as a young man. It was through this family that Walt came to know Christ. He learned how to trust God with his life, in the midst of challenging circumstances. Never did he realize his past would prepare him for his future.
Then Walt shared some incredible testimonies of pro athletes who were in difficult positions and could have become divisive on their respective teams. He helped them to trust God with their lives and be ready for whatever might happen. In each of these incidences they were ready when the call came and they made significant contributions in some big games. One was Dave Roberts who changed baseball history with one stolen base!
It was amazing how these pro athletes who seem to have everything, still had to learn the same lessons that each of us ordinary citizens have to live with every day. Many have all the money they could want, but they are still empty and in need of Christ in their lives. They had to answer Walt’s question, “Can you trust Him with your life?” It is a good question and really must be answered by each of us.
No matter who you are, there are things that seem out of your control, but they are not out of His control. When you learn to let go and trust God you will be amazed at the results that will come forth. Try it. You have nothing to lose.
