With the election of Barak Obama as the 44th President of the United States many acknowledge it as an incredible victory for the civil rights movement. Who would have ever thought the action of one woman, Rosa Parks, a pebble in the ocean of injustice toward African Americans would result in a black man being elected to the highest office in the United States of America.
On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver James Blake's order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger. Her action was not the first of its kind: Irene Morgan, in 1946, and Sarah Louise Keys, in 1955, had won rulings before the Supreme Court and the Interstate Commerce Commission respectively in the area of interstate bus travel. But unlike these previous individual actions of civil disobedience, Parks' action sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. (Wikipedia)
Often the result of one person convinced of what is right, steps into their destiny and causes a massive public reaction that brings change one could never imagine. The fear that grips a nation can be broken by one courageous act. After David had killed Goliath history records, And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 2Now the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance of £the valley and to the gates of Ekron. (1 Sam. 17:51,52)
It was the slaying of a giant by one person that motivated an entire nation to pursue their enemies and defeat them. Amazing that others had tried and failed, but Rosa Parks still believed she could make a difference. The difference was she followed her courageous stand against inequality with plans that rallied the people to catch her vision. She was responsible for launching Martin Luther King to civil rights prominence.
Rosa Parks knew what her part was in bringing about change. She didn’t try to do more than she was destined to do. She was persistent in her actions, but was not possessive of her vision. She understood that the battle would not be won in a day, but someone had to throw the first punch. She was more than willing to fight, but understood the battle was bigger and more encompassing than she could imagine. She did what she was destined to do and the rest is history!
How about you? Are you willing to do your part by stepping into your destiny in whatever way that may be? It may seem like a pebble being tossed into the ocean, but never underestimate the courageous act of one person. History is full of stories like David and Goliath where one person’s action rallied the masses to bring victory to the majority.
It may take many years to see the results of your personal destiny, but one thing is for sure, nothing happens if nothing is ventured! Do not underestimate the power of your actions. Be bold. Do what is right. Be who you were created to be. Step into the place that has been reserved for you to sit and do not give it up! You just might make history! Imagine that!
